The Real Thing

Josh Hamilton joins the cast of The Real Thing

Josh Hamilton.

We are pleased to announce that Josh Hamilton will play "Max" opposite Ewan McGregor ("Henry"), Maggie Gyllenhaal ("Annie") and Cynthia Nixon ("Charlotte") in Tom Stoppard's Tony® Award-winning play The Real Thing, directed by Sam Gold.

Josh Hamilton was recently featured in the FX television program "American Horror Story: Coven," and will appear in FOX's upcoming "Gracepoint," which is a remake of the UK's "Broadchurch." His recent New York stage credits include Neil LaBute's Reasons to be Happy at MCC and Theresa Rebeck's Dead Accounts on Broadway.

The Real Thing returns to Broadway in a stirring and sensual new production. This Tony® Award-winning play by Tom Stoppard (The Coast of Utopia, Arcadia) first seduced audiences in London and New York nearly 30 years ago. Henry is a playwright not so happily married to Charlotte, the lead actress in his play about a marriage on the verge of collapse. When Henry's affair with their friend Annie threatens to destroy his own marriage, he discovers that life has started imitating art. After Annie leaves her husband so she and Henry can begin a new life together, he can't help but wonder whether their love is fiction or the real thing. Delectably witty and deeply affecting, The Real Thing takes a daring glimpse at relationships, fidelity, and the passions that often blur our perception of love.

Tom Stoppard's relationship with Roundabout Theatre Company includes Broadway productions of The Real Inspector Hound and The Fifteen Minute Hamlet. This fall we will also present the New York debut of Mr. Stoppard's romantic drama Indian Ink at the Laura Pels Theatre at the Harold and Miriam Steinberg Center for Theatre.

Mr. Stoppard's The Real Thing premiered on November 16, 1982 at The Strand Theatre in London. The Real Thing is the winner of the 1984 Tony® Award for Best Play and returns to the Broadway stage having been produced 14 years ago.

The full cast and design team will be announced shortly.

The Real Thing will begin preview performances on Thursday, October 2, 2014 at the American Airlines Theatre on Broadway. For more information about The Real Thing and tickets, please visit our website.

I am excited to announce further casting for our upcoming production of The Real ThingCynthia Nixon will be appearing as Charlotte, joining the previously announced Ewan McGregor and Maggie Gyllenhaal. Cynthia first joined the Roundabout family in 2001 with The Women. She went on to appear in Distracted at the Laura Pels Theatre, for which she was nominated for a Drama League Award. Today, of course, she is an invaluable member of the Roundabout Board of Directors.

In 1984, Cynthia appeared in the Broadway debut of The Real Thing as Henry’s daughter Debbie, while simultaneously appearing in Hurlyburly. Her nightly appearances in two theaters to act in two different plays (both directed by Mike Nichols) was a Broadway first.

It is thrilling to have Cynthia back on the Roundabout stage in a show that has already been an important part of her career.

2014-2015 Season News

It is my great pleasure to announce two new productions for the 2014-2015 season. We will produce Tom Stoppard’s Indian Ink at the Laura Pels Theatre, directed by Carey Perloff. We will also have a revival of Michael Frayn’s beloved comedy Noises Off, directed by Jeremy Herrin, as our second play at the American Airlines Theatre next season. These plays join the previously announced production of The Real Thing this fall.

I am thrilled to have two of Tom’s plays running concurrently on our stages, and it is particularly exciting to give New York audiences their first look at his beautiful play set in pre-and post-colonial India. Carey directed for Roundabout back in 1986 before moving to San Francisco, where she has been the Artistic Director of A.C.T. for 20 years. It will be great to have both Tom and Carey back at the Roundabout.

Jeremy Herrin will be making his Broadway (and Roundabout) debut with Noises Off. Jeremy has extensive credits in the West End and around London. I’m thrilled to welcome him to the Roundabout family, and I can’t wait to see what he does with this classic farce.

Tickets for these productions are currently only available as part of a subscription. I look forward to sharing even more news about the season ahead with you soon.
