2016-2017 Season

New Plays at Roundabout

 

I am thrilled to share several exciting updates for the coming season, all of them related to new plays. First, I’m proud to announce that the Roundabout Underground Program, which has brought us the exceptional work of Stephen Karam and Joshua Harmon, among many others, will be expanding its programming. Starting next Fall, we will now produce two new works in the Underground each season. The expansion of this vital program (not to mention its phenomenal success thus far) is a huge step forward for Roundabout’s New Play Initiative and a testament to the hard work and impeccable taste of Roundabout Underground producers Robyn Goodman, Jill Rafson, and Josh Fiedler, as well as the rest of the Literary team. I know I speak for Robyn, Jill, and Josh when I say that I couldn’t be more excited to introduce two early-career playwrights to New York audiences each season.

I am also happy to share the play that has been chosen for the first slot in the Underground’s newly expanded season. Jenny Rachel Weiner’s Kingdom Come will premiere in the Underground in Fall 2016. Jenny’s wonderful play appeared in May’s Underground Reading Series, and I’m very excited to bring her work back to the Black Box Theatre in a fully realized production.

We also have two incredibly exciting new plays headed to the Laura Pels Theatre next season, both of them world premieres by Underground alums. Steven Levenson’s If I Forget will be coming to the Pels next winter, and Meghan Kennedy’s Roundabout-commissioned Napoli, Brooklyn, will be at the Pels in spring 2017. You know Steven from two previous plays at Roundabout: 2008’s The Language of Trees and 2013’s The Unavoidable Disappearance of Tom Durnin. And you will remember Meghan from her 2014 Underground play, Too Much, Too Much, Too Many.

I am honored to welcome all three of these writers to our 2016-2017 Season, and I’m especially thankful to have Steven and Meghan, two invaluable members of the Roundabout family of artists, returning to our theatre.

HolidayInn_640x640I am proud to announce that Roundabout, in association with Universal Stage Productions, will be producing Holiday Inn, The New Irving Berlin Musical at Studio 54 in the fall of the 2016-2017 season. The production will mark the show’s Broadway premiere, directed by Gordon Greenberg and choreographed by Denis Jones. Inspired by the Academy Award-winning film Holiday Inn, this musical, with music and lyrics by Irving Berlin and a new book by Gordon Greenberg and Chad Hodge, takes some of Berlin’s most iconic songs (including “Steppin’ Out With My Baby” and “Cheek to Cheek”) and weaves them seamlessly together with a wonderful libretto by Chad and Gordon. The result is a romantic, inventive, exceptionally fun musical that feels both fresh and timeless.

Irving Berlin’s music is an indispensable part of the American theatrical and musical canon. His exceptional body of work includes 1,200 songs, the scores for more than a dozen Broadway musicals, and the scores for dozens more Hollywood movie musicals. His credits include the song “God Bless America,” the musical Annie Get Your Gun, and the film Top Hat, among many, many others. I am thrilled to bring more than twenty of his classic songs to life in Holiday Inn.

Co-writer/director Gordon Greenberg and co-writer Chad Hodge have a phenomenal listing of credits between them. Gordon’s career has included shows at Williamstown, Old Globe, Paper Mill, Signature, Goodspeed (where he premiered Holiday Inn), and Huntington, among many others, and his acclaimed revival of Guys and Dolls will open on the West End this winter. Chad has numerous television credits to his name; most recently, he created and executive-produced the FOX series “Wayward Pines.” His other television work includes TNT’s upcoming “Good Behavior” and NBC’s “The Playboy Club.” Along with choreographer Denis Jones (whose recent work includes Broadway’s Honeymoon in Vegas), I know Chad and Gordon will bring exceptional quality to the stage of Studio 54.

I am thrilled to announce two exciting shows for our 2016-2017 season!

This fall, we will be premiering a new Broadway production of Anton Chekhov’s The Cherry Orchard, in a new adaptation by our very own Stephen Karam (The Humans) and directed by Simon Godwin. I am honored to welcome this exceptional classic to the American Airlines Theatre, especially with the phenomenal talent of Stephen and Simon onboard. Of course, you know Stephen from his incredible work at Roundabout, including Pulitzer Prize finalist Sons of the Prophet and the currently-running hit The Humans. I’m happy to welcome Simon to the Roundabout family of artists. He is the Associate Director at the National Theatre and has an amazing body of work in England, including productions at the National, the Royal Court, Bristol Old Vic, and the Royal Shakespeare Company.

Off-Broadway, in the Laura Pels Theatre, we will be producing the American premiere of a new play, Love, Love, Love, by Mike Bartlett and directed by Michael Mayer. Mike is a gifted and prolific British writer, best known to American audiences for his play King Charles III, which recently opened on Broadway after a stellar run in London’s West End. He is a three-time Olivier-award winner for his plays King Charles III, Bull, and Cock. Love, Love, Love has appeared at multiple English theatres, including the Royal Court, and I am so pleased that we will be producing its American premiere. Director Michael Mayer has a long relationship with Roundabout. He has directed numerous shows with us, including Tony-winning productions of A View From the Bridge and Side Man. In 2007, Michael received a Tony Award for his direction of Spring Awakening.

These productions mark the start of a terrifically exciting season for Roundabout. I am so proud to welcome this roster of old friends and rising stars to the Roundabout stage.
