I fell for The Language of Trees because of its stage directions. I know that’s a willful thing to say because, barring a truly bizarre theatrical crisis (electrical failure? scenery thieves?), you won’t get the opportunity to hear those stage directions read aloud when you attend the production.
The world sutures itself back up.
Loretta looks at Eben. Her heart breaks a little bit.
I’m a sucker for this kind of thing – it expresses exactly what’s happening in a moment, but it is not something that can ever actually be put on a stage. And while these directions are surprising and poetic, more importantly they are just one piece of an idea that this play speaks to – that the gaps between people, between what is said and what can’t actually be expressed, are spaces that we must bridge if we want to survive in this world.
